Different Stories Resonate with Different People

lovingmyselfishard

I will always reblog this.

brightwanderer

I once spent three hours scouring the internet to find this comic again, I will not let that be repeated.

lynati

@signoraviolettavalery I meant to ask last night if you’d ever seen this comic before.

marithlizard

This is one of the few things I always reblog when it comes round, because everyone should get to see it.

Someone brought up the lack of scope people have in regards to the 'Animation is Cinema' sentiment. Or, how people who make those tweets or posts always point out the same four American CGI movies.

So, with that in mind, let me offer:

Millennium Actress (2001)

image

WolfWalkers (2020)

image

Persepolis (2007)

image

When the Wind Blows (1986)

image

Please feel free to add any other strong pieces! Remember, try to aim for animated films that are either traditionally animated or a from foreign (specifically not Disney/Disney-affiliated) studios.

Finally, an excuse!

Angakusajaujuq: The Shaman's Apprentice (Zacharias Kunuk, 2021)

A young shaman continues her training by journeying to the underworld. Directed by a renowned Inuk filmmaker.

Full film, English subtitles: https://gem.cbc.ca/the-shamans-apprentice/s01

Tale of Tales (Yuri Norstein, 1979)

image

A poetic exploration of memory and Soviet history. One of Norstein's finest.

Full film, English subtitles: https://youtu.be/hN1zimADh6Q

Dou kyu sei – Classmates (Shouko Nakamura, 2016)

image

An exploration of a romance between two high school boys. Sweet, melancholic, and beautifully animated.

Trailer: https://youtu.be/R8KZ9WOTU78

The Apprentice (Richard Condie, 1991)

image

An apprentice jester tries to follow his master to a castle and fails repeatedly. An aggressively strange film which dares the viewer to understand what is happening and why.

Full film: https://www.nfb.ca/film/apprentice/

The Wolf House (Cristobal León & Joaquín Cociña, 2018)

image

A young woman runs away from home and tries to live in a constantly transforming abandoned home. Uniquely multi-genre and animates the whole set throughout.

Trailer: https://youtu.be/RCoYazbA1Ic

The Cybernetic Grandma (Jiří Trnka, 1962)

image

A young girl experiences a retro-futuristic and deeply alienating Soviet vision of the future. Full of fascinating and fun imagery.

Full film, English subtitles: https://youtu.be/HfWYJVevRaA

The Burden (Niki Lindroth von Bahr, 2017)

image

A musical depiction of animals working mundane jobs and staying in hotels. I was delighted to discover this available online, the final sequence has never left me.

Full film, English subtitles: https://youtu.be/O_Mmd26EN9g

Alice (Jan Švankmajer, 1988)

image

An adaptation of Alice in Wonderland revolving around a live action girl exploring run-down environments full of eerie stop motion creatures. A thoroughly distinct take on the original story.

Full film, English subtitles: https://youtu.be/Bnbd1exbIco

On-Gaku: Our Sound (Kenji Iwaisawa, 2019)

image

Three lazy high school delinquents decide to start a band. This movie is perfect.

Trailer: https://youtu.be/KoqptivRx_0

Plasmo (Anthony Lawrence, 1996)

image

This is actually a short run series, not a film, but I'm including it anyways. A young transforming alien boy explores space with his friends, searching for his home. Consistently inventive throughout, and made with a great deal of care.

The work of Ralph Bakshi

Definitely films of their time and definitely not for everyone, but to leave out his work and influence on animation would be remiss.

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya by Isao Takahata and Studio Ghibli

Incredible film, moving artistry.

There’s way more but I’m too distracted. Hope more people add great ones!

Made in Blender.

aquilacalvitium

Okay op first of all this is strikingly breathtaking and I can't believe I'm not looking at a real animal oh my gods!!!!!! 😭😭😭

Secondly I need you to know it looks like my cat

prismatic-bell

Someone did this in BLENDER and threw it on Tumblr for FREE and Disney with all their custom-made cutting-edge state-of-the-art programs can’t pull off realistic water bubbles and wants you to pay twenty bucks a ticket for it.

Support unions for CG artists. This is what being allowed to have passion looks like.
